Yosuke Sasaki
A wreath laying ceremony took place on the Avenue Road this morning to remember Yosuke Sasaki, the 24 year old Japanese national who was stabbed to death in Dundalk five years ago today.
Mr Sasaki was attacked by Mohamed Morei while returning from work in the early hours of the morning.
Mohamed Morei was later found not guilty by reason of insanity at the Central Criminal Court.
Afterward the wreath laying, anniversary mass was celebrated in St. Joseph`s Redemptorist Church.
Ms Mayuko Suzuki, Second Secretary of the Consular Section of the Japanese Embassy in Dublin attended the ceremony, with the embassy saying in a statement:
“It has been 5 years since Mr. Sasaki’s passing due to such a tragic incident here in Dundalk.
“It is with deep regret and profound sadness that Mr. Sasaki, a young man with a promising future, was involved in such a tragedy.
“The fact that the ceremony and the service is taking place today means that Mr. Sasaki continues to be remembered here in Ireland, with the support of the people in Dundalk, and Ireland as a whole.
“We would like to express our sincere appreciation for keeping memories of Mr Sasaki.
“On this very special occasion today, let us remember his life that was filled with love and joy, together with his friends and the community that he has had great impact on.”

In a statement released to Oliver Morgan, who organised the ceremony, Mr Sasaki’s mother said:
“Five years have passed since Yosuke's death. Still sad and unbelievable. But the warmth and kindness of the Irish people will live forever in me. Thank you for thinking of Yosuke.
“We thank the people of Dundalk for their continued warm support to our family.
A clear winter sky reminds me of Dundalk. I hope to see you all again.”
