A recent crash at the Ard Easmuinn junction
Dundalk councillor and resident of Ard Easmuinn, Seán Kelly, has called for safety works to be carried out at a junction in the Ard Easmuinn estate in Dundalk, the location "of numerous road accidents over the years and two alone in recent weeks".
Cllr Kelly says he is bringing a motion to the Dundalk Municipal District April meeting, requesting that "Louth County Council carry out immediate works to improve safety at a junction within the Ard Easmuinn estate that has been the site of numerous road accidents over the past number of years.
"These works should include better signage and road markings and any other measures available to the Council that they believe would improve safety for road users, local residents and pedestrians in the area."
The estate is in a 30 km speed zone, but Cllr Kelly told the Dundalk Democrat that "this stretch of road from Mount Avenue to the Ecco Road past the Church has long been used as a short cut and cars use excessive speed. It is particularly busy at rush hour in the mornings and afternoons. The last crash occurred on a busy Friday afternoon when schools were finished and children were playing in the area."
The Fianna Fáil councillor called for the Council to address the issue adding that "this is not only a danger to road users but local residents and pedestrians walking in the area.
"There is one lady’s garden wall that has been knocked on several occasions by these road accidents. The Council need to erect new signage, improve road markings and see what else can be done to ensure the safety of all."
