Latest figures from the Central Statistics Office (CSO) show that there was a huge fall in the number of homes granted planning permission in the third quarter (Q3) of this year.
Planning permission was granted for 202 homes in Louth in Q3 of this year, down from 904 in Q2. Compared to Q3 in 2023, it is also less than half the 516 homes granted planning permission in the third quarter of last year.
Of the 202 homes granted planning permission in Q3 of this year, 68 were multi-development houses, 26 were one off houses, and 108 were apartments.
While the number of one off houses granted planning rose by nine compared to the second quarter of this year, there was a significant fall in the number of multi-development houses, with just 68 granted planning in Q3 compared to 431 in Q2 of this year, and 350 in the same quarter of last year.
Nationally, there was an annual decrease of 10.9% in the total number of dwelling units approved in Q3 2024 to 8,611 units, down from 9,662 units in Q3 2023. Houses accounted for 61% of all dwelling units granted planning permission in Q3 2024, while apartments made up the remaining 39%.
In Q3 2024, the number of houses granted planning permission rose by 9% when compared with Q3 2023, while in contrast, apartment approvals fell by 31%. The number of multi-development houses receiving planning permission grew by 13% annually, from 3,632 units in Q3 2023 to 4,101 units in Q3 2024.
There was an annual decrease of 3% in the number of one-off houses receiving planning permission in Q3 2024 compared with an annual increase of 2% in Q2 2024.
