Sharing the details on social media, An Garda Síochána said that it "stopped the driver of this vehicle. Driver was a learner permit holder unaccompanied, had no insurance and tested positive for cocaine".

It said that the driver was: “Driving without a fully licensed driver accompaning them [sic], no insurance, no nct and testing positive for cocaine… driver collected more charges than a phone at 1%.”

An Garda Síochána added that the vehicle was seized and the driver was arrested, with a court appearance to follow.

Nationally, a Garda Roads Policing Operation is taking place throughout the St Patrick’s Bank Holiday Weekend, until 7:00am on Wednesday 18th March 2026.

After five days of the operation there has been six fatalities as a result of traffic collisions on our roads. This brings the total number of fatalities on Irish roads this year to 38.

Throughout this weekend's Roads Policing Operation, Gardaí are conducting both statutory Mandatory Intoxicant Testing (MIT) and regular, high-visibility policing checkpoints.

To date, a total of 188 people were arrested for driving under the influence of an intoxicant (alcohol and drugs). In excess of 4,250 drivers were detected for speeding offences after five days of the operation.

Over 450 drivers have been detected holding a mobile phone or not wearing a seatbelt since this operation began.

An Garda Síochána is appealing to all road users to never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Drivers and all other road users are being reminded to plan ahead and organise a safe way home if socialising for St. Patrick's Day.

All drivers who are taking to the roads today are reminded to slow down, take extra care and to give their driving their full attention.
