Singer Madonna has told Spanish football club Celta Vigo their missing shirt, which she wore during a 1990 performance at the team’s stadium, is “hanging in my archives” after they asked for help to find it.
The La Liga club’s president, Marian Mourino Terrazo, wrote an open letter asking for help to trace the shirt earlier this week, in which she described the shirt as a “symbol of part of the emotional heritage of our club and what it stands for”.
Madonna, 67, whose full name is Madonna Ciccone, said in a post on X: “This shirt is hanging in my archives. I am wearing and representing your team in spirit.”

In the letter from the president of the Galician club, which currently sits in sixth place in Spain’s highest division of men’s football, she asked the singer “for your help with something that means a great deal to us”.
Terrazo said, on July 29 1990, Madonna performed live at the club’s stadium, Balaidos, where she wore the team’s sky blue shirt.
She added: “This beloved memory still lives among our supporters.
“The photograph of you wearing our shirt has become a myth and is now part of our history which is written often beyond the limits of the football pitch.”
She said this “iconic image has grown to shine differently as years have passed” and added “that is why we hold on to the hope of finding the garment you once wore”.

Prior to Celta’s game against Real Madrid in their Balaidos stadium on Friday evening, the club played footage of the concert, and had a band, dancers and singers appear on the pitch to perform Madonna’s hit song, Like A Prayer.
Ms Mourino ends the letter asking Madonna: “If you know where it may be, or if you would like to join us in the search to retrieve it, please contact us via private message (DM). With admiration, Marian Mourino Terrazo.”
Madonna is the bestselling female artist of all time, as of 2023, when the record was last certified by Guinness World Records, having achieved 13 UK number one singles and 12 number one albums, she is best known for songs such as Like A Virgin, Holiday and Into The Groove.
