Gardaí investigating the disappearance and murder of Annie McCarrick more than 30 years ago have arrested a man on suspicion of her murder.

In an update, issued this Thursday morning, gardai say the man, aged in his 60s, is being detained under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 at a garda station in Dublin.

Gardai say a search operation is also underway at a residence in Clondalkin, Dublin 22.

"Elements of that house and garden will be searched and subject of both technical and forensic examinations," said a spokesperson who added that the current residents of the property "are not connected in any way" with Annie McCarrick or her disappearance.

Annie McCarrick, who was born in New York, moved to Ireland in January 1993 and settled into rental accommodation at St. Catherine’s Court, Sandymount, Dublin 4 with two other tenants. She has not been seen since March 26, 2023.

Previously, gardai confirmed the last confirmed sighting of Annie McCarrick was shortly before 11am on March 26, 2023 when she visited the Allied Irish Bank, Sandymount Road, to carry out some personal banking (CCTV image below).

A cold case review of the investigation into Annie's disappearance was carried out a number of years ago and the investigation was officially upgraded to a murder investigation on March 24, 2023

Confirming the latest update, a garda spokesperson said: "The arrest and search operation is being led by an investigation team from the DMR South Central Division, Serious Crime Unit based at Irishtown garda station under the direction of a Senior Investigating Officer and with the assistance of the Serious Crime Review Team at the  Garda National Bureau of Criminal Investigation."

While the search is being led by gardai, the operation has the support of other State and external expertise if required. A Temporary Restricted Airspace (TRA) has been put in place by the Irish Aviation Authority in the immediate location of the property being searched.

An Garda Síochána say the family of Annie McCarrick have been fully updated in relation to this investigation, including this Thursday's developments.

Gardai have also renewed their appeal to anyone with information, no matter how small or insignificant that they might believe it to be, to make contact with the investigation team.

"Gardaí also appeal to anyone that may have previously come forward but who felt that they could not provide Gardaí with all of the relevant information they had in relation to this matter, to please make contact with An Garda Síochána again," said a spokesperson.

"With the passage of time they may now be in a position to speak further with the investigation team. Any information will be welcomed by the investigation team, and will be treated in the strictest confidence," they added.

The investigation team can be contacted at Irishtown garda station on 01 666 9600 or anyone who wishes to provide information confidentially should contact the Garda Confidential Line at 1800 666 111.
