LATEST: Louth gardai name five young people killed in horror road crash in Dundalk

The five young people who died Saturday's road crash near Dundalk have been named

Gardaí in County Louth have named the five young people who died in a horror road crash, close to Dundalk on Saturday night.

Investigations are continuing following the collision, involving a Volkswagen Golf and a Toyota Landcruiser, which occurred on the L3168 in the townland of Gibstown at around 9pm on Saturday.

The five deceased, who were all aged in their early 20s, were travelling in the VW Golf. Another occupant from the Golf was hospitalised along with two people who were travelling in the Landcruiser.

In an update, issued this Sunday evening, gardai confirmed the identities of the five people who died.

They were: Chloe McGee, aged 23, from Carickmacross; Alan McCluskey, aged 23, from Drumconrath; Dylan Commins, aged 23, from Drumconrath; Shay Duffy, aged 21, from Carrickmacross and Chloe Hipson, aged 21 from Lanarkshire, Scotland.

Gardai say Family Liaison Officers have been appointed to each of the families to provide support and that An Garda Síochána will keep the families updated as to the course of the ongoing investigation.

A section of the L3168 remains closed between the N52 and the R171, pending a technical examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators and Divisional Scenes of Crime Unit.  Local traffic diversions remain in place.

An Garda Síochána have notified the local Coroner’s Office and the Office of the State Pathologist. 

Gardai say examinations of the scene and the removal of the deceased will be carried out under the advice and supervision of the State Pathologist and Post Mortems will be carried out over the coming days.

An incident room has been established at Dundalk garda station and an investigation has commenced under a Senior Investigating Officer.

Investigating gardai are making a number of public appeals
* to any person with any information on this road traffic collision to contact the investigation team at Dundalk garda station. 
* to any person who was on the L3168 between 8.30pm and 9.15pm on Saturday to contact the garda investigation team.
• to any person who might have any camera footage or images from the L3168, Gibstown area between 8.30pm and 9.15pm on Saturday to give that footage or images to the investigation team at Dundalk garda station.
 
Anyone with information is asked to contact Dundalk garda station on 042 938 8400, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any garda station.
In a statement, issued this Sunday, Taoiseach Micheál Martin expressed his shock and horror at what happened. "I am numbed and shocked at the horrific road crash that has led to the loss of five young lives in Dundalk, County Louth. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of these young people, and those injured. We also think of our first responders, who worked so professionally in truly devastating circumstances," he said.
