Tipp legend Paudie Maher

A stalwart of Tipperary hurling and Thurles Sarsfields’ Padraic Maher has been chosen as The Tipperary Association Dublin’s Person of the Year for 2022.

The Association President, Tom Sherlock, also announced that the recently retired Secretary of the Tipperary GAA Board, Tim Floyd has been selected for induction into the Association’s Hall of Fame.

Padraic Maher retired from hurling in February 2022 on medical advice bringing to an end a glittering 13 year inter-county career during which he won every honour in the game.

The six times All-Star, Padraic won five Munster senior hurling championships, three All-Irelands and a Railway Cup medal.

At club level Padraic won seven senior county championships and one Munster medal with his club Thurles Sarsfields.

He also holds medals for college and garda competitions.

But it is his bursts out of defence, ball in hand that regularly lifted the spirit of Tipperary supporters and inspired colleagues to redouble their efforts.

He was unyielding under pressure, reaching high into the sky to grab the dropping ball and scattering opponents in his wake as he delivered long, accurate clearances.

A great leader on the field of play, turning defence into attack.

Padraic has joined Liam Cahill’s senior hurling management team vacating a mentor’s role with his beloved Sarsfield’s Under 21s.

No doubt his passion and knowledge of the game will help bring renewed success to Tipperary in the not-too-distant future.

Padraic recalled his experiences and memoirs in his book: All On The Line, published last year.

Padraic Maher is a very worthy nominee for the Tipperary Association Dublin Person of the Year Award for 2022 which is sponsored by Louis Fitzgerald, Louis Fitzgerald Group.

Tim Floyd recently retired as Secretary of the Tipperary County Board.

A native of Newport, Tim comes from a family with a strong tradition of involvement in Gaelic and community activities.

As a player Tim won five North Tipp championships with Newport, in both hurling and football as well as a county football championship in 1985.

He has represented Tipperary at all levels in football.

He was a member of the 1976 minor hurling team culminating in an All- Ireland minor medal.

A man of many talents Tim was and is a top-class administrator, efficient, always courteous and affable. An excellent people person he built relationships with clubs, team management, officials, players and supporters.

His popularity and influence in the wider GAA community was highly beneficial to the operation of the Association in Tipperary.

Tim has made a huge contribution to the development and success of the GAA in Tipperary.

He was a driving force behind the highly successful County Draw and was also instrumental in the development of Dr Morris Park.

He was responsible for negotiating the sponsorship package with FBD Insurance resulting in the renaming of FBD Semple Stadium and sponsorship of the FBD County Championships.

During his term he has seen Tipperary win All-Ireland hurling titles at all levels as well as a Munster senior football title and Munster and All-Ireland minor titles.

Away from the cut and thrust of the GAA, Tim is a talented singer, a wonderful companion and an all round gentleman.

He represented Newport in Scor winning the Munster final in the Ballad Group section.

Tim Floyd is a very worthy nominee for induction into the Tipperary Association Dublin Hall of Fame where he joins many illustrious Tipperary women and men.

The award is sponsored by the Aherne family of the Palace Bar, Dublin.
