Clonmel Celtic 3 – 4 Two Mile Borris
Clonmel Celtic welcomed Two Mile Borris to Ferryhouse on Saturday in what promised to be one of the most highly anticipated games of the season and the teams didn’t disappoint, producing seven goals in 90 minutes of action.
In the opening minutes Borris got off to a flying start when, after just four minutes, Tom Ryan scored directly from a free kick to put his side in front.
For the next 15 minutes the away team dominated and extended their lead in the 20th minute when Louis Coughlan scored a glancing header from another dead ball.
At two down, the challenge for Celtic to get back into the game was tough, but they settled and began to get a foothold in the game, reducing the lead to a single goal just after the half-hour mark, when Jack Aylward struck a superb long range shot to find the top corner.
Five minutes before the break Aylward struck again from outside the box to level the game, and set up a massive second half.
Celtic continued their momentum at the beginning of the second period and took the lead ten minutes in when Cillian O’Brien got in behind the Borris defence and finished well from close range. But full credit to the visitors, who never allowed heads to drop and just a short time later they levelled the game once again when Tristan Troy found himself free in the penalty area and he made no mistake from 12 yards.
At this point it was all to play for, but the decisive moment came with just under 20 minutes to play, when the away team were awarded a penalty that was fired home by Jake Cullen Jordan, to once again allow Borris get their noses in front.
Celtic rallied and continued to create chances, especially after the Borris keeper saw red, but the stand-in goalie managed to pull off some superb saves to keep Celtic at bay.
In the end that was enough and Borris were delighted to hold out for the win and a place in the next round.
