Urgent call made for potential foster parents in Tipperary to come forward

A major call for more potential foster parents to come forward in Tipperary was made at the recent Tipperary County Council meeting of the Thurles-Templemore Municipal District.

Speaking on behalf of Tusla at the meeting were Shirley Brosnan and Jeannette Seymour, on behalf of Tusla.

During their meeting with the councillors, the spokeswomen said that their goal with foster child relocation was to keep the children in the same areas, as they will have built connections and relationships with other children through schools, sports teams, clubs, etc., and that it would not be fair for their development to relocate them to new areas and stunt their growth by having them go through this process again, however the lack of carers in the area is forcing them to have to consider this.

Currently in Tipperary, there are 35 carer families, with 121 children in care.

More carers are retiring from their carer duties than are being assessed to become carers.

TUSLA are calling for anyone interested in becoming a carer to come forth and go through the application process.

Those who wish to become carers must be over 25 years of age, and be financially stable.

They will go through a vetting process which will determine their suitability to caring.

Upon being selected, carers will be given a medical card, and an allowance of €400 per child for children under 12, and €425 for children over 12.

The group say that only 12 people have inquired about becoming carers in recent times, and some of these people will not go through the full application process.

They added that they cannot commit to training foster carers unless they have enough people interested in signing up for the programme.

Fianna Fáil Cllr Sean Ryan commended the work of the group, claiming that a family based outlook on this type of care is best for the children and their growth and development.

If you are interested in becoming involved with the programme, you can freephone 1800 222 771, or email tusla.fostering@tusla.ie to speak with a social worker about the process.
