Social and cultural Indian group enjoyed celebration in Tipperary

The memorable event at Moyle Rovers GAA centre not only celebrated Onam but also strengthened bonds within the local Malayalee community

MIST (Malayalees In South Tipperary) is a vibrant social and cultural Indian group from the State of Kerala, India dedicated to fostering connections.

The recent MIST Onam Thakarthonam Celebration at the Moyle Rovers GAA Sports Club was an event that beautifully blended tradition with modernity. While the focus was on cultural heritage, the planning and execution were top-notch, with attention to every detail.

A significant highlight of the event was the Onasadhya, the grand traditional feast, which was catered by HolyGrail. HolyGrail is known for its authenticity in preparing Kerala dishes, and for this event they ensured that the attendees got the true flavor of Onam.

The Onasadhya was a multi-course meal served on banana leaves, a hallmark of Kerala’s Onam celebrations, featuring a variety of dishes like sambar, avial, thoran, pappadam, payasam and more.

Each dish in the feast held cultural significance, symbolising the abundance and unity that Onam represents. The flavours were rich, and the elaborate set-up added to the festive atmosphere, with attendees relishing the traditional spread.

Mass Events was in charge of the surround sound, ensuring that the audio-visual experience matched the grandeur of the celebration. From the moment Clonmel’s Mayor Michael Murphy gave his opening speech to the final beats of the performances, the sound quality was crystal clear and powerful.

Mass Events used advanced sound technology to enhance every moment, from the rhythmic beats of the Thakil Band to the energetic tracks played by DJ Karthick. Their professional set-up ensured that the dance performances, songs and even the auction were not just seen but felt. The quality of the sound elevated the entire experience, allowing the attendance of 350 people to immerse themselves in the celebratory vibe.

The programme featured a variety of traditional and contemporary performances. Children performed the Thiruvathira, a traditional dance often associated with Onam, symbolising joy and femininity. Adults also joined in with performances that showcased Kerala’s rich cultural heritage.

The dance routines were colourful and energetic, drawing enthusiastic applause from the audience. There were also modern dance performances, creating a lively and diverse entertainment line-up.

Musical performances were central to the event’s success. The Thakil Band played traditional beats that resonated deeply with the Malayalee audience, while DJ Karthick brought a contemporary flair with popular music, creating a vibrant atmosphere that encouraged participation and dance. The blend of traditional and modern music appealed to both younger and older attendees.

In addition to the cultural performances and music, an auction was held, adding excitement and interactivity to the event. The auction featured a range of items and participants eagerly bid, adding a playful yet competitive edge to the celebration. Raffles and other engaging activities ensured there was never a dull moment, keeping the audience entertained throughout the day.

The event truly came alive with the energetic dance performances by both children and adults, with their colourful costumes and well-coordinated routines. The electrifying energy in the room was palpable, especially when the audience joined in, dancing to the beats of the Thakil Band and DJ Karthick’s modern tunes.
