Ms Marguerite Sutton, Green Schools Co-ordinator, thanked everyone for their dedication over the past year and paid special tribute to the Green Schools Committee, which includes students from every class:
“Their hard work and enthusiasm have been central to achieving this award,” she said.
Principal James Hayden also praised pupils, staff, and parents for their support and highlighted the Committee’s efforts over the past two years in promoting sustainable practices across the school.
The Green Schools Committee has led a range of initiatives aimed at reducing carbon emissions since September 2023. Under the slogan ‘Be Seen Be Green, Join the Carbon Team’, the school promoted ‘Walk/Roll to School Days’, a ‘No Engine Idling’ campaign, and cycling, scooting, and walking, supported by a series of training sessions.
The slogan itself was created by former Sixth Class pupil Christopher Ryan, chosen as the winner of a school-wide competition.
During the ceremony, Ms Sutton and the Committee explained the submission process to the Environment Section of North Tipperary County Council and acknowledged the hard work of all pupils throughout the year.
Thomas Hickey, Chairperson of the Board of Management, also praised the school community for embracing the ideals of An Taisce and thanked the Committee for their dedication.
The fourth Green Flag represents not only a significant achievement for Silvermines NS but also underscores the school’s continuing commitment to carbon reduction, energy efficiency, and waste recycling.
