A long-delayed anti-poverty strategy will be sent to Executive ministers on Monday, Gordon Lyons has said.
The Communities Minister told the Northern Ireland Assembly that the strategy required Executive approval.
The strategy was committed to in 2006. A court ruling this month said Stormont’s Executive Committee was in breach of its legal obligations by not adopting a strategy to tackle poverty, deprivation and social exclusion.
SDLP MLA Mark Durkan asked Mr Lyons for an update on the anti-poverty strategy.
He said: “When will we see it and when will people feel the benefit of it?”
Mr Lyons responded: “I can confirm I will be sending to Executive colleagues today the anti-poverty strategy in draft.
“I hope to see the impact of that as soon as possible but it will ultimately be dependent on getting Executive approval.”
He added: “First and foremost this is providing a framework for the way forward and I think it is right we do it.
“We need to be agile and make sure we are actually putting measures in place that are going to have a difference.”
