A busy road in Edenderry will close for six weeks on Monday as major works take place to facilitate the new section of an Inner Relief Road in the town.

Offaly County Council has informed residents that the R401 from Dunnes Stores to the Carrick Road will be closed from January 15 until February 23.

Councillor Noel Cribbin took to social media to share the information with locals.

He said: "There is major works to go on here; water, sewage and ESB to facilitate enabling works for the new section of the Inner Relief Roads.

"The road will be closed completely to traffic, cyclists and pedestrians, so all traffic using this for school runs will now have to come up the Main Street.

"Sorry for the bad news and inconvenience but it’s essential works and will be worth the in the long run," he concluded.

A map of the diversion route is available on the Offaly County Council website.
