Plan to replace old power lines in Argyll and Bute gets green light

The Scottish Government has approved plans to renew a number of overhead power lines in Argyll and Bute.

The project is intended to enhance the resilience of the network in the area around Dunoon and improve energy security and boost clean power targets.

The Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) Transmission has gained ministers’ approval for the scheme which will see the installation and operation of about 11 miles of overhead lines between Dunoon substation and Loch Long.

The project will feature 77 new pylons of up to 39 metres tall.

The project will replace the current electrical infrastructure in the area, which was installed in the 1970s. It will be dismantled once the new line is operational.

SSEN bosses say this will future-proof the network in Argyll and Bute.

Laura McWilliams, project director at SSEN Transmission, said: “This is a welcome step forward for our transmission network locally and throughout our network area in Scotland.

“The Section 37 consent from the Scottish Government for our Dunoon project reflects SSEN Transmission’s commitment to delivering a modern, efficient, and environmentally responsible transmission network that will enhance local network resilience, replace aging electrical infrastructure, and help us reach clean power and energy security goals.

“As we now move to the delivery phase of the project, we are committed to working constructively with local communities and businesses to minimise and mitigate construction impacts, alongside maximising the economic opportunities this investment will bring.”
