Rotherham brush aside Charlton to continue flying start to year

Rotherham’s resurgence continued as they saw off Charlton 4-2.

Steve Evans’ side have now recorded three wins in their unbeaten start to the new year and are firmly looking up the League table.

The Millers raced into a ninth-minute lead when Andre Green’s effort trickled in off the post.

It was 2-0 in the 14th minute when Green was sent clear and had the presence of mind to pick out Alex MacDonald in a better position. He dragged his shot beyond Ashley Maynard-Brewer.

United were threatening to get more before the break with Mallik Wilks firing wide and then having a shot blocked by defender Macaulay Gillesphey after he had rounded the goalkeeper.

Charlton got one back on the stroke of half time when Greg Docherty crossed for Miles Leaburn to stroke home.

But their joy was short-lived as Zak Jules nodded home at the second time of asking in the fourth minute of stoppage time to make it 3-1 to the hosts.

Wilks got the goal his performance deserved after 54 minutes as he lofted the ball over Maynard-Brewer from Green’s flick-on to put further daylight between the teams, and Charlton could only respond through Matty Godden’s late consolation.
