Herbie Kane nets winner for Plymouth against Doncaster

Substitute Herbie Kane scored a second-half winner as Plymouth came from behind to beat Doncaster 2-1 at Home Park.

Kane’s audacious free-kick from the left eluded everyone after Bim Pepple had cancelled out Elliot Lee’s opener for the visitors.

Doncaster were rewarded for their early pressure in the 22nd minute when Lee connected with skipper Owen Bailey’s cross from the right to crash home a volley past stand-in goalkeeper Luca Ashby-Hammond.

Bailey then teed up Harry Clifton, whose rising drive forced a superb two-handed save from Ashby-Hammond after 29 minutes.

Argyle’s first opening came in the 43rd minute when Ronan Curtis sent over a cross from the right that just eluded attacker Caleb Watts in the six-yard box.

But, in first-half stoppage time, another cross from the right, this time from Wes Harding, was headed goalwards by Watts, giving Pepple the easiest of tap-ins at the far post.

Curtis won a penalty in the 49th minute when his shot was charged down by Bailey but Rovers keeper Zander Clark saved the winger’s spot-kick before Kane bagged the winner.
