Doncaster manager Grant McCann was left frustrated after his dominant side failed to beat Luton in their Sky Bet League One clash.
Brandon Hanlan’s second-half strike cancelled out Kasey Palmer’s first goal for the Hatters in a 1-1 draw at the Eco-Power Stadium.
The point did move Rovers one small step away from the relegation zone but it really should have been three points, with McCann saying: “I felt the performance deserved a win. I was pleased with the attitude and application of the players all game, but I am disappointed not to win with all the chances we had.
“It is pleasing, though, and I’d rather see it as a positive and not a negative. We’re creating chances and we know we need to take them but if we keep playing like that, then nine times out of 10 we’ll win games.’
Asked if he felt it was a case of one point gained or two points dropped in their battle to beat the drop, he added: “We know we need to win games and it’s probably two points dropped to the teams above us. But we shouldn’t even be in the same division as Luton, budget-wise.
“They probably have the biggest budget in the division and we’ve played really well against them.”
Luton took the lead with their first real effort on goal. Palmer strode forward unchallenged through the centre and hit a speculative shot past Zander Clark from 25 yards.
Rovers were level on the hour mark, when Owen Bailey’s flicked header from a long ball out of defence put Hanlan in on goal and he drove his shot past Josh Keeley.
The match ended on a sour note for battling Luton, with defender Nigel Lonwijk stretchered off after the full-time whistle after he put his body on the line to deny Rovers a last-gasp winner.
Luton boss Jack Wilshere admitted his side were fortunate to hold out for a share of the spoils.
He said: “I felt we were probably lucky to get a point. In the first half we showed a little bit, but in the second half we lost momentum and we allowed them to make it into a transitional game which suited them.
“That being said, you’ve still got defend your box and maybe in the past we would have lost this game, so that was a positive for me.
“It was difficult due to the wind and pitch at times, but that’s not a reason why we couldn’t find our rhythm and take the momentum away from them. But credit to the boys for defending the box the way we did.
“We showed character, but I still feel we can do more and at least show a bit of calm at times and get the ball down and play.”
