The condition of Carrick-on-Suir Abbey Road has been labelled “atrocious” by a councillor who has complained that potholes keep reappearing on it despite repeated filling by the council’s road patching machine.

Carrick-on-Suir Cllr Kieran Bourke highlighted the state of the busy Carrickbeg road at Carrick-on-Suir Municipal District’s latest monthly meeting where he called for its inclusion in this year’s council roads programme.

“The road is in bits. It’s atrocious,” he declared. “It’s being patched anytime the patching unit comes to town but you could patch it again a few days later.”

He warned that two potholes on this road right up against the kerb outside the Friary posed an accident risk.

He pointed out that a lot of heavy trucks as well as tractors and trailers travel on this road. District Engineer Michael Scully agreed the road wasn’t in a good condition and is used by a lot of heavy goods vehicles.

He said patching was only a temporary solution and roads that take large volumes of traffic required a more long term solution. Mr Scully promised to talk to colleagues about including it in the 2025 programme of road works.
