Tipperary footballer Stephen O’Brien paid an emotional tribute to late manager Philly Ryan after their impressive 1-18 to 0-8 victory over Leitrim, a result that moved Tipp into third place in Division 4.
Clonmel Commercials legend Ryan passed away in October 2025 at the age of 56, and Sunday’s fixture carried added significance as it was played at his club's home ground.
O’Brien, who scored six points in a commanding Tipperary performance, said the squad had spoken during the week about honouring their former manager, with the occasion holding particular meaning given Ryan’s final game in charge had also come against Leitrim.
"We were coming back to Clonmel today, to Philly Ryan’s home club, and we wanted to respect that," O'Brien said.
"It was a bit poignant that Philly’s last game in charge was against Leitrim and coming to his home club, so that was definitely something that we spoke about during the week."
