Stranger Things star Winona Ryder will be joining the cast of Netflix hit Wednesday for its forthcoming third season, it has been announced.
Ryder rose to fame in the 1980s after starring in American filmmaker Tim Burton’s horror-comedy film, Beetlejuice – a role she reprised almost four decades later for its sequel which she starred in alongside Jenna Ortega.
It has been revealed the Hollywood actress is among the names to join the cast of Wednesday, a supernatural mystery series which stars Ortega and on which Burton is an executive producer.
In an announcement video posted by Netflix on Monday, Finnish actor Joonas Suotamo is seen in his role as butler Lurch unveiling the star-studded cast for the upcoming season in the form of a welcome feast.
Ryder, 54, is set to play a character named Tabitha, while French actress Eva Green will play Aunt Ophelia Frump – the estranged sister of Morticia Addams (Catherine Zeta-Jones).
Green is also renowned for her collaborations with gothic director Burton and starred in his 2016 dark fantasy film, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children.
Speaking to Netflix website Tudum, Green, 45, said: “I’m thrilled to join the woefully twisted world of Wednesday as Aunt Ophelia.
“This show is such a deliciously dark and witty world, I can’t wait to bring my own touch of cuckoo-ness to the Addams family.”
American actor Chris Sarandon, who starred in Burton’s animated fantasy film, The Nightmare Before Christmas, will join the cast as Balthazar.
Meanwhile, Australian actor Noah Taylor – who featured as Mr Bucket in Burton’s 2005 film adaptation of Roald Dahl’s Charlie And The Chocolate Factory – will play Cyrus.
Burton told Netflix website Tudum he is “so excited” to be back for Wednesday’s third season, adding: “It’s great to be reunited with all of the original cast.
“The addition of some dear friends and past collaborators of mine: Winona, Eva, Chris, Noah; makes this season extra special. I feel very lucky.”
US actor Fred Armisen is seen as the eccentric Uncle Fester in the cast announcement video, which also reveals that among the additions to the show are actor Oscar Morgan, who will join the cast as Atticus, and Kennedy Moyer who will play Daisy.
The video confirms the return of fan-favourite cast members, including Ortega as titular character Wednesday and Emma Myers as colourful and upbeat werewolf Enid Sinclair.
The rest of the Addams clan will also return, with Zeta-Jones and Luis Guzman back as Wednesday’s parents Morticia and Gomez, and Isaac Ordonez as her brother, Pugsley.
The third season of the show will also see Joanna Lumley, Billie Piper, Hunter Doohan and Joy Sunday return, as well as George Farmer, Moosa Mostafa, Evie Templeton, Victor Dorobantu and Luyanda Unati Lewis-Nyawo.
The show centres around the character of Wednesday, based on the cartoons of Charles Addams, which inspired a 1960s TV series and the popular Addams Family films, starring Christina Ricci as Wednesday.
The third season of Wednesday is now in production, with further details yet to be announced.
