A 16-year-old youth has appeared in Derry Magistrates Court charged with criminal damage and assault.

The youth, who cannot be named to due to his age, was charged with one count of assault and a charge of criminal damage to a car window.

Both charges were said to have occurred on September 11.

Defence solicitor Paddy MacDermott said that his client made 'ill advised remarks' that he would not stay in the children's home where he is a resident.

He said he believed that police had no objection to bail to an address approved by the PSNI and Social Services.

A police officer said that they would have released the youth except for the remarks he made about not staying in the children's home.

It was agreed that he would be released into an address approved by police under the condition that he have no contact with the injured parties.

He will appear back in court on September 19.
