26 people rescued after boats capsize on River Foyle

Almost 30 people had to be rescued this afternoon after two boats capsized on the River Foyle.
A major incident was declared after the boats capsized near Carrigans.
It's understood that none of the 26 people rescued was seriously injured but a large number of them suffered from hypothermia.
The boats had been taking in a charity event in aid of the YMCA in Derry.
While details remain unclear as to what caused the vessels to capsize, it's believed that strong winds may have played a part.
A police spokesperson said the alert was raised arround 2pm.
A number of people were taken to Altnagelvin Hospital for treatment while others rescued from the water were treated at Prehen Boat House.
Foyle SDLP Assemblyman Mark H Durkan was at the scene of today's drama.
"Fortunately it would appear that everyone is safe but several people have been taken to hospital to be treated for hypothermia.
"It has been a cold day and the water in the river would have been freezing."
Mr Durkan praised the efforts of the emergency services in dealing with today's incident.
