An 80-year-old man has been returned for trial to Derry Crown Court on a series of historical sexual abuse charges following a preliminary enquiry at Derry Magistrates' Court.

The man, who cannot be named to protect the identity of the victim, was charged with three counts of indecent assault against a female.

He was charged that between April 3, 1978 and January 1, 1980, he indecently assaulted a female and one charge of gross indecency with or towards a child over the same dates.

It was accepted that there was a case to answer and there were no contrary submissions.

The man chose not to call any witnesses and not to submit any statements.

He was returned for trial to Derry Crown Court on February 4 and released on bail.
