Campbell concerned at withdrawal of Irish language schools funding

Concern has been expressed by a Derry councillor at the decision of the education minister to withdraw funding for nurture units at two Irish language schools.

Sinn Fein Cllr Kevin Campbell said he was “very concerned” at the decision by Peter Weir to stop funding to Bunscoil Bheann Mhadagáin and Bunscoil an Droichid.

Cllr Campbell added; “"The announcement has caused considerable anger and disappointment at both schools and among the wider Irish language community.

"These schools had been told the funding was in place and had made plans on that basis.

"Studies have shown that nurture units make a huge difference to the educational outcomes of children and should be encouraged.”

He concluded: "Sinn Féin met with representatives at schools following their protest at Stormont this morning to offer them our support and we will be raising this issue with the education minister."
