Two Occupational Therapy (OT) students from County Derry will travel to Indonesia in early 2027 to volunteer at schools there.

Swatragh student Amy McGuckin and Katie McGuigan, from Draperstown, are among five OT students who are set to take on a five-week volunteer placement in Bali in January.

The ladies, who are in their final year at Ulster University, will be joined by fellow students from Co Tyrone and Co Laois.

Their volunteering mission in Bali is part of their course and Amy and Katie have organised a fundraiser to help them to purchase occupational therapy and sensory equipment for the schoolchildren they will be supporting.

“Bingo for Bali”, a fun Bingo Loco style evening, will be held at An Rath Dubh Moneyneena on Saturday, November 14 at 7.30pm. Tickets are £15 and there will also be a raffle on the night with prizes kindly donated by local businesses.

“Our course includes a five-week role-emerging placement, with the option to complete it abroad. We chose to organise our placement in Bali through Plan My Gap Year and will be travelling in January 2027,” explained Amy.

“We are fundraising to purchase occupational therapy and sensory equipment to support the children’s learning, play and everyday activities.

“We will be working with children in a school, supporting their participation in learning, play and everyday activities. We hope to provide occupational therapy equipment and introduce activities and strategies to support sensory regulation, working alongside school staff to respond to the children’s needs.”

Amy and Katie have set themselves a fundraising target of £1,000 and say they would appreciate the support of the local community.

“The funds raised will go towards purchasing occupational therapy and sensory equipment and transporting these resources to Bali.

“These resources will help children engage in school activities and will remain at the school to benefit them beyond our placement,” continued Amy.

“We would really encourage people to come along for a fun night while supporting a cause that means a lot to us. Every ticket purchased and donation made will help us provide useful equipment and resources for the children.”
