Assembly, East Derry MLA Claire Sugden has congratulated Coleraine FC on their Irish Cup success.

Ms Sugden described the achievement as "a moment that belongs to the whole community".

Speaking in the Assembly, she said: "Saturday’s result didn’t happen by chance. It’s the outcome of months of hard work, consistency and real determination from the players, coaching staff and everyone behind the scenes.

“Over the past week in particular, you could feel something building across Coleraine. Operation White and Blue brought people together in a way that reminded us just how much this club means locally. Businesses, families and supporters all played their part in getting behind the team," she added.

“That kind of backing matters. It lifts players, but it also shows the strength of connection between local clubs and the communities they represent.

“This win is a huge achievement, but it should also be a reminder of the value of local football. Clubs like Coleraine are at the heart of our towns. They bring people together, create opportunities for young people and contribute to local pride and identity.

“We need to see that recognised more clearly in how we support and fund local sport. Success like this shows what is possible, but clubs shouldn’t have to rely on goodwill alone to sustain that.

“For now, though, this is a moment to enjoy. Congratulations to everyone involved – it’s thoroughly deserved.”
