County Derry volunteer wins prestigious ‘Above and Beyond’ award

Julie Corbett brings home national recognition for outstanding voluntary service
Julie Corbett, from Portstewart, has won the ‘Above and Beyond’ award at the RAF Benevolent Fund’s prestigious annual awards ceremony.
Now celebrating its 14th year, the awards presented by the RAF Benevolent Fund honour the dedication of the fundraisers, volunteers and partners who support the RAF’s longest standing charity.
The 2026 awards took place on Thursday 30 April in London and was attended by hundreds of RAF personnel, veterans, and supporters of the RAF Benevolent Fund.
Julie Corbett won the ‘Above and Beyond’ award in recognition of her outstanding voluntary fundraising for the Fund in Northern Ireland, raising more than £65,000 since 2019. Through her tireless commitment, thoughtful planning and the strong network of volunteers and supporters she has brought together, Julie has delivered a wide range of inclusive community fundraising events across the region. Her work has strengthened local support for the RAF Family and made a meaningful difference to those in need.
Julie said: “While this award has been presented to me, it truly belongs to my team, who stand beside me out in the cold across Northern Ireland – collecting donations through rain, hail and, very occasionally, sunshine. This is a team achievement, and it’s a real pleasure to receive it. It’s especially meaningful to be able to give something back to the Fund.
"What makes the biggest difference for me is being out on the streets, whether collecting or running events, when people so often come up to share their stories, including veterans themselves, or those whose loved ones have served and been supported by the Fund. Hearing those experiences makes every moment worthwhile.”
Air Vice Marshal Chris Elliot, Chief Executive of the RAF Benevolent Fund, said: “Our annual awards give us a valued opportunity to come together and recognise the extraordinary support we receive from people and organisations who give so generously in support of the RAF Family. From serving personnel and veterans, to the many civilian supporters who fundraise, provide vital welfare support, champion our work and help spread the word, every contribution plays a part in strengthening the positive outcomes we achieve for many in the RAF Family.
“Very many congratulations to Julie on this thoroughly deserved award. Their commitment, passion and advocacy have been truly inspiring. On behalf of everyone at the RAF Benevolent Fund, thank you for the difference you make.”
The 'Above and Beyond' Award was sponsored by Midshires Mobility Group.
