East Derry Sinn Féin MLA Cathal Ó hOisín his expressed his concern at the delivery levels of social housing units in the East Derry Constituency. Mr Ó hOisín has revealed that in the last five years only 100 units of social housing have been built, with only five completed in the last year- a situation which he says is ‘totally unacceptable.’ The Dungiven man said: “In an answer to a written question to myself, the currently absent Minister for Social Development confirmed these figures which are totally unacceptable given the housing need in the constituency. My offices in Dungiven and Kilrea are increasingly receiving housing accommodation requests and have seen an ever lengthening waiting list, particularly in the cases of single men who find it almost impossible to acquire the necessary points. “I am also concerned that under the Social Housing Development Scheme substantially less than 300 units are programmed to start up to 2018, this will simply not address the housing need and will inevitably will cause misery for those awaiting a home,” said Mr Ó hOisín.
