DDBKA continues continue to engage with authorities and the public to raise awareness of 'need to conserve and protect the Native Irish honeybee'

Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council Ruairí McHugh has presented certificates to the participants of an 'Introduction to Beekeeping' course.

The course, which took place in Derry's North West Regional College and ran inconjuction with the Derry and District Beekeepers Association (DDBKA), ended on Thursday, April 23.

Speaking after the certificate presentation, DDBKA chairperson Tony Doherty said: “I want to thank the Mayor for attending the final night of our course and presenting certificates to those who completed their classroom learning.  They will now move on to practical lessons in our Association apiary.

"2026 has been another year of great interest in beekeeping in the wider North West, and DDBKA has ambitious plans for the future as we welcome this year's cohort to our community.

"We continue to engage with authorities and the public to raise awareness of the threat from the Asian hornet, and the need to conserve and protect the Native Irish honeybee.

"As we step into another season this year, we do so with a focus on our colonies and their health, and the sharing of knowledge amongst new members of our community”.
