Derry Magistrate's Court was told today that a local man is accused of 'biting a portion of someone's ear' inflicting what a judge described as 'a serious injury'.

Emmett Doherty (27) of Cashelmore Park in Derry appeared charged causing grievous bodily harm with intent on December 7.

A police officer connected the accused to the charge.

Defence solicitor Paddy McDaid told the court there wouldn't be an application for bail.

He said that the defendant was on licence until next August and had subsequently had been recalled so there was no application for bail.

District Judge Oonagh Mullan said this appeared to be a 'serious attack' and the defendant had been recalled to prison.

Doherty was remanded in custody and will appear again on January 2.
