Derry man charged with attacking neighbour with machete

A man has appeared at Derry Magistrates' Court charged with attacking his neighbour with a machete.
Eamonn Barrett (45) of Clon Elagh in Derry was charged with possession of a machete, wounding with intent to cause grievious bodily harm, criminal damage, aggravated burglary and two counts of assaulting police.
The court heard police received a 999 call on December 8 from the alleged injured party after he had allegedly been attacked by his neighbor with a machete.
Both men were said to have been drinking together before Barrett left and allegedly returned with a machete, striking the injured party's front door and cutting him with it as he tried to force his way inside.
When police arrived, Barrett was said to be acting aggressively, assaulting two officers as they tried to arrest him.
Police objected to bail as Barrett has 11 previous convictions, including threats to kill and two restraining orders.
He answered 'no comment' when interviewed and denied all the charges against his neighbor.
Defence solicitor Paddy MacDermott said that Barrett has a 'limited record' and doesn't accept that he committed the offences.
District Judge Barney McElholm said that bail would only be granted to an address outside the city and one approved by the PSNI.
As well as an address approved by police the defendant must observe a curfew, wear a tag and he is not to enter Clon Elagh.
He will appear again on December 23.
