A man has appeared at Derry Magistrates Court charged with possession of cocaine and possession with intent to supply.

Mark Ellis (37) of Fallowlea Park in Derry was charged with the offences on November 21 following a police search of a property during which a police drug dog indicated towards two items, one containing a white powder and one rock-like substance.

Three phones were also found and the items were tested and found to be cocaine valued at £3,000.

Ellis, who was also in breach of bail conditions, was found in the property and denied that the items were drugs, claiming that one of them was cauliflower.

Ellis was on bail for driving under the influence and assault and police said that 'drugs were at the heart' of his offending.

Police objected to bail as he has 47 previous convictions, including death by dangerous driving, and 26 previous breaches of bail.

Defence barrister Thomas McKeever said that Ellis denied all the charges and claims that he will be 'vindicated'.

Bail was refused and he will appear again on December  12.
