21-year-old admitted to hate-aggravated arson after CCTV caught group burning community bonfire materials

A man charged with arson of pallets being collected for a July 12th bonfire will be sentenced in August along with two others charged in connection with the same incident.

Liam Gallagher (21) of Quarry Street in Derry admitted one charge of arson aggravated by hostility on June 12 last year.

The court heard that at 2.10am CCTV observed four males in a vehicle in the Fountain area.

Two males left the vehicle wearing masks and could be seen setting fire to pallets and traffic cones that had been gathered.

The vehicle then left the area but was stopped by police in the Lecky Road area and masks were found in the car.

The court was told that two others involved in the incident were also awaiting sentence.

District Judge Ted Magill said that he was not going to sentence Gallagher without the others and said it would be 'quite wrong' of him to sentence Gallagher and not the others.

He adjourned the case until August 14 so that all three can be sentenced together.
