James Jonathan Briers (25) of Spencer Road in Derry admitted a charges of assault, assault on police and criminal damage to a police vehicle on March 3 this year.

The court heard that police were called to the top deck of the Craigavon Bridge after CCTV operators reported a male and female arguing.

The female told them Briers had been locked out of his address due to him being late and he started arguing with her.

She said he was 'angry' and began pushing her.

Briers was arrested and during the course of the arrest he 'kicked an officer in the chest with force.'

He was also verbally abusive and made his comments to the two female officers.

While in the police vehicle Briers spat on numerous times.

At interview he said he pushed the woman because she was trying to leave and he didn't want her to.

A defence barrister said that Briers had wanted to plead guilty from a very early stage.

Deputy District Judge John Connolly said that the behaviour was 'absolutely deplorable' and showed a terrible attitude towards women.

He jailed Briers for five months.
