Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Councillor Patricia Logue, has hosted local families in Guildhall Square for a special festive experience before Christmas day.

Countdown to Christmas on Thursday 21st was hosted by inimitable Derry Entertainer Michael Doherty and featured festive entertainment from carol signers, Christmas characters and an appearance from Santa Claus under the stunning backdrop of Ireland’s tallest Christmas tree.

Mayor Logue posed for photographs with families and had selection boxes for the youngsters who attended.

“I loved having the opportunity to soak up the festive atmosphere with local families ahead of Christmas day,” she said.

“Thanks to the beautiful choirs who took part and to Michael Doherty who’s infectious energy kept us all smiling throughout.”

Local choirs singing on the Guildhall steps included the Villagers, Voices of the Foyle, Hive and Momentum.

Countdown to Christmas helped raise funds for the Mayor's Charities Foyle Hospice and The Ryan McBride Foundation.

Following confirmation from the Met Office of inclement weather conditions forecast for Friday 22 December Council has had to make the unfortunate decision to cancel the Countdown to Christmas event in Guildhall Square.

"We apologise for any inconvenience caused but the health and safety of the public is our paramount concern and some of the infrastructure associated with the event could not be safely erected in the conditions," a spokesperson said.
