The former Oakgrove Principal and Integrated Education Fund Chair passes away peacefully at Altnagelvin Hospital in Derry

A profound sense of sadness has enveloped the Oakgrove school community following the peaceful passing of their foundational leader, Marie Cowan (née Lynch).

Marie, who died peacefully on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, at Altnagelvin Hospital, was the loving mother of Gerrard and Rosaleen, mother-in-law of Sarah and Mike, devoted grandmother of Daniel, Finn, Evie, Eoin, Grace and Anna, dear sister of John and the late Patrick and Michael and cherished cousin of Anne.

As the founding Principal of Oakgrove Integrated College and former Chair of the Integrated Education Fund, Mrs Cowan leaves behind an enduring legacy of peace, reconciliation, and educational transformation in Northern Ireland.

In 1992, amidst the darkest days of the conflict, Marie and her husband Ronnie partnered with pioneering local families to establish the Foyle Trust for Integrated Education.

Their vision led to the opening of a primary school and subsequently Oakgrove Integrated College, creating a vital sanctuary where young people from all backgrounds could learn and grow together.

Mrs Cowan served as Oakgrove's dedicated leader from 1992 until 2006, shaping the lives of over 5,200 young people and instilling the core belief that more unites us than divides us.

In an emotional statement, Oakgrove Integrated College expressed profound sadness, describing Mrs Cowan as their "dedicated, caring and inspirational leader."

The college noted that among past pupils and those who worked alongside her, "there is a deep sense of sorrow, mingled with enormous affection, admiration, and gratitude for the vision and sheer 'graft' she poured into building the school we know and love today."

Oakgrove highlighted her immense bravery during the Troubles, stating that "in the darkest days of conflict, Marie and those founding families showed a level of courage that transformed our community."

They emphasised that she "overcame every hurdle placed in their path, risking much so that our children could inherit a better, more inclusive future."

The school community affirmed that "Marie didn't just lead a school: she lived out the dream of an integrated future," building a legacy defined by her own hallmarks of "patience, enthusiasm, energy, hope, and a vital sense of humour."

The Integrated Education Fund also paid a warm tribute to their former Chair, stating that the organisation is "deeply saddened by the news" and recognising that "Marie dedicated so much of her life to Integrated Education." The IEF remembered her fondly as a "champion of our Carson Awards where she loved the judging the creative talents of all our students."

The family home remains strictly private. Everyone is welcome to pay their respects today (Friday, May 15) at W J O’Brien & Son’s Funeral Home, 110 Clooney Road, Eglinton, BT47 3PU, during the visitation hours of 2.00pm to 3.00pm and 7.00pm to 9.00pm.

The Requiem Mass will be celebrated tomorrow (Saturday, May 16) at 1.00pm at St Eugene’s Cathedral in Derry, with the interment taking place immediately afterwards in the City Cemetery.

Family has requested family flowers only. In honour of Marie’s life-long dedication to helping others, donations in lieu of flowers can be made directly to the Alzheimer’s Society.
