Derry Seagate staff raise £24,000 for cancer fight

Staff at Derry’s Seagate plant have raised £24,000 to support the fight against cancer.
Employees at the Springtown plant have this year chosen Cancer Research UK as their charity of the year.
A series of fundraising events have been organised for the charity.
Richard Gamble, Equipment Director for Seagate, said the company’s staff deserved great credit for their charity efforts.
“Having been in partnership with CRUK for one year, I am extremely pleased with the response we have had from our employees right across the site.
“Our recent 'Its A Knockout' event, where the effort put in by some 170 staff, proved it was well worth braving the cold October weather.
“There is recognition that cancer is so indiscriminate to all walks of life, gender or creed and people are impacted directly or indirectly.
“Whilst we have had some good stories with employees who have beaten it, unfortunately a recent fatality brought the full impact of the disease to the staff.
“We have raised to date £24,000, an amazing figure which demonstrates that Seagate Springtown is serious about Beating Cancer Sooner.”
Sharon Arbuckle, Fundraising Manager for Cancer Research UK, thanked the Seagate staff for their support.
“We are overwhelmed by the generous staff at Seagate,” she said.
“They have raised such an incredible amount of money for us and are helping Beat Cancer Sooner.
“The funds will be spent locally at Altnagelvin where we are currently running clinical trials.
“We are very excited about the new Radiotherapy Unit which is opening in 2016 which will be so much more accessible for local people to receive cancer treatment.
