A woman has been given a conditional discharge at Derry Magistrates' Court charged with resisting police.

Deborah Kelly (48) of Edenmore Court in Derry was charged with, on January 1, resisting police after they were called by the ambulance service.

Kelly was reported to be holding a knife to her own neck when police arrived. After being warned to put it down and refusing, she was arrested for resisting police.

Defence Barrister Graine McAnaney called the incident an 'unfortunate and sad start to the new year', telling the court that, despite her extensive record, Kelly had not offended in almost two years, last appearing in court in January 2023.

She said that Kelly has issues with substance abuse and had recently relapsed.

District Judge Barney McElhom said that there was 'no suggestion' that Kelly was doing anything other than trying to keep hold of the knife.

He granted a conditional discharge, telling her that he 'hopes things go better' for her.
