Amateur archaeologists had the opportunity to try their hand at some excavation techniques and have a chat to the experts during a series of events marking Archaeology Day, which took place at the Tower Museum and Craft Village on Saturday.

Organised by Derry City and Strabane District Council, the events were designed to give members of the public the opportunity to experience a sample archaeological dig and take part in some interesting family activities involving some ancient artefacts. Participants learned how to excavate the remains of a Viking house and dig for Viking treasures and artefacts dating back over 1,000 years.

The events also took place the day after the Ulster History Circle unveiled a special plaque in honour of trail blazing local archaeologist and explorer Mabel Colhoun who devoted her life to charting the history of Inishowen.

A special exhibition exploring her life is now open at the Tower Museum where samples of her immense collection of slides and photographs are now on display.
