Derry SDLP Councillor Angela Dobbins is urging support for a new scheme aimed at preventing burglaries.

Cllr Dobbins was speaking after a meeting with the PSNI yesterday which revealed there was an apparent rise in house burglaries.

She said to combat this, the PSNI have launched a Nominated Neighbour and Quick Check cards.

She added: “The more vulnerable within our community will be issued with these cards which will be placed near the front door and telephone and shown to callers that are not recognised.

“This card will have a freephone number for ‘Quick Check,’ a scheme that can be used to quickly check, with a range of service providers, that the identity of callers is genuine.

“Failing this check the caller should thenbe asked to go to a nominated neighbour.

“The nominated neighbour will then check the identity and credentials of the caller and accompany the caller back to the householder.

“If the caller returns to the householder without the nominated neighbour it is then advised that the householder call the PSNI.”

Cllr Dobbins stressed both schemes were aimed at helping the elderly and more vulnerable In society feel more secure in their homes and not be targeted by bogus callers.

She added anyone who felt unsafe in their home or who may have an elderly relative living alone should avail of the schemes by contacting the PSNI community safety officer, local council Policing and Community Safety Partnership (PCSP) or their local councillor .

Cllr Dobbins concluded: ”A few simple steps is all it takes.”
