Dungiven residents to continue their monthly bypass protest

Local residents, councillors and members of the Dungiven Bypass Committee will be returning to Dungiven Main Street this evening at 4pm, in protest to further delays to the Dungiven bypass and A6 dualling scheme.

A ‘white line picket’ has been organised every month since November last year, after local Sinn Féin councillors vowed to picket in the town until plans for the town’s bypass are finally “set in motion”.

Proposals for the A6 Dualling scheme, which includes plans for a Dungiven bypass, were presented to the Minister for Regional Development Danny Kennedy in October 2012, but have since received little mention, even after an Executive budget boost of £250million in public expenditure at the end of last year.

The protests do seem to be putting some pressure on Mr Kennedy however, who released a statement in December assuring that attempts to progress the A6 dualling plan were being made and promised an update in the New Year.

As of yet, the Department for Regional Development have made no comment on the matter this year and so further action looks set to continue.
