Fantastic Feile action around Derry

Clubs from all over the country descended on the Oakleaf county for the Feile Peil na nÓg
It was a hive of activity around the county of Derry on Saturday as clubs from all over the country descended on the Oakleaf county for the Feile Peil na nÓg.
In all 20 clubs from Derry took part and while their was no joy in the cup competitions their was silverware to be brought to some with Ballerin, Ballinderry, Glen, Greenlough and Slaughtneil, all taking home honours in the Shield and Plate competitions.
Owenbeg was the host for the division 1 titles in both the boys and girls with the host county having four clubs involved. In the boys, county champions Ballinderry were joined by Ballinacreen, Lavey and Magherafelt while the Shamrocks were also represented by the girls. Following the group games it was Magherafelt that advanced to the cup semi finals having topped their group. The Rossa lads overcame Ballintubber and Naomh Mearnog to set up a last four clash with Naas but the Kildare side proved to strong running out winners by eight points.
Unfortunately, the other three representatives all failed to win a group game, leaving them into the Plate competition with Ballinderry facing Ballinascreen while Lavey came head to head against Ballintubber. In the end the decider came down to Ballinderry and Lavey that went the way of Ballinderry.
In the girls, Ballinderrry got off to the perfect start with a victory over Kerry by the narrowest of margins before defeating New York. This left themselves and Claregalway battling it out for top spot in their final group game with the Shamrocks just edged out. However, they still finished second and into the cup semi finals against Glanmire and turned in a winning performance to reach the decider with six points to spare over the Cork side. That set up another mouth watering encounter against Claregalway who had beaten them in the group. Unfortunately, it was to be a similar fate for the Shamrocks as the Clare side ran out winners with by five.
Elsewhere in the boys competitions, Glenullin flew the flag in division 3 going all the way to the cup semi final before bowing out to a strong St Loman’s Mullingar side. Both Glen and Lissan were in action in Division 4 in Banagher. The Watty Grahams lost both their opening group games before recording victory over Bennettsbridge. Lissan came through their group unbeaten with two wins and a draw against Micheal Davitts. In the cup semi final they faced Boyle but the concession of four goals proved to be costly.
Glen saw off Curry/Curraigh in the Shield semi-final to set up another encounter against Bennettsbridge and at the finish the Watty Graham’s got the all important goal to edge home victorious to lift the Shield.
In Division 5, five Oakleaf sides were battling it out with Claudy and Foreglen bowed out in the cup quarter finals while Ballymaguigan lost out in the Shield final. It was better news for Ballerin though as they won the Plate having overcome Doire Trasna in the semi final before proving too hot for Chicago in the final.
In the LGFA, Derry had plenty of sides involved in Division 5 with Kilrea and Slaughtneil playing host. Kilrea claiming a spot in the last four of the cup when they saw off both Glack and Scotland. In the semi final they faced Warwickshire who had pipped Swatragh for top spot in their group. Kilrea, had a heartbreak 1-3 to 1-2 defeat in the semi final.
Swatragh would have been disappointed having beaten Warwickshire in their opening game but then lost out to Desertmartin. They still made it to the semi final of the Shield but lost out to Scotland. Slaughtneil also made the Shield having beaten Eoghan Rua before losing to Leitrim’s Annaduff. A comprehensive win against North East set up a Shield final against Scotland for the Emmetts. The success story for Slaughtneil continued when they came out on top in their first season fielding ladies football teams.

In the Region 4 contest, Craigbane also had a fine competition with wins against Brookeborough and Cooley Kickhams. A defeat to Errigal Ciaran meant they finished second and a cup semi against the Breffni counties Castlerahan/Denn which they overcame to set up a repeat clash with the Tyrone side but the Red Hand county side proved too good on the day.
