Irish-medium education (IME) is thriving in Derry and the proof of the pudding is the announcement a new bunscoil (primary school) is all set to open in the city’s Waterside.
Scheduled to open its doors to Rang a hAon (Primary One) pupils, in September 2027, plans for Gaelscoil an Phiarsaigh Dhoire Trasna have taken what its management committee described as “a significant step forward”.
A development proposal for the school has now been submitted to Derry City and Strabane District Council’s Planning Department.
Speaking to The Derry News, Gaelscoil an Phiarsaigh Dhoire Trasna spokesperson, Mark ó Docherty said the proposal could “pave the way for a purpose-built home for the school”.
“It represents an important development for IME in Derry,” he added.
“Gaelscoil an Phiarsaigh Dhoire Trasna provides education through the medium of Irish, offering local families the opportunity to have their children educated in an Irish-language environment.
“The proposed development is intended to provide modern facilities to support the school's continued growth and meet the educational needs of pupils, staff and the wider school community.
“The submission of the proposal marks an important milestone in efforts to secure a long-term future for the school and strengthen the provision of IME in the Waterside.

“The development could also benefit families across the wider Derry area who wish to access IME close to home, while helping to promote the Irish language among future generations,” said Mr ó Docherty.
“The Gaelscoil an Phiarsaigh Dhoire Trasna plans will now be considered through the relevant planning process,” he added, “and we will keep everyone informed regarding further details as the proposal progresses.
“For the Waterside community, the prospect of a new Irish-medium school represents an opportunity to expand educational choice and provide facilities designed to support learning through Irish.
“If approved, the development would mark a significant milestone for Gaelscoil an Phiarsaigh Dhoire Trasna and a further step in the development of Irish-medium education across Derry.”
