Inquest of Derry man believed to have been hit by rubber bullet in 1973 resumes

Thomas Friel (21) from Creggan Heights died on May 22, 1973 after being injured on May 17 during rioting in the Creggan Heights area
A new inquest into the death of a Derry man who it was believed had been hit by a rubber bullet in 1973 has resumed.
Thomas Friel (21) from Creggan Heights died on May 22, 1973 after being injured on May 17 during rioting in the Creggan Heights area.
A previous inquest ruled in 2021 that Mr Friel had died as a result of a fall and not as a result of a rubber bullet.
However, this verdict was overturned after a judicial review and a new hearing was ordered.
Today at a review hearing in Laganside in Belfast Michael Chambers counsel for the Coroner told Judge Mark Reel that there was broad agreement between the parties on how to proceed.
He said that it was proposed to call Soldiers identified as B, C and possibly D who were on duty on the night in question.
Mr Chambers said that it was not proposed to call any of the civilian witnesses who gave evidence at the last inquest.
Another review hearing will be held.
