It's 'relaxed' panto time at Millennium Forum... Oh yes it is!

Derry's Millennium Forum has announced the return of a ‘relaxed performance’ of its annual Christmas panto that will encourage adults and young people with sensory difficulties to experience theatre on their terms.

A specially adapted performance of Jack and the Beanstalk will take place on Monday 22nd December at 3.00pm following its hugely successful pilot last year.

The carefully adapted version will aim to develop a way for young people with learning disabilities and their families to enjoy a stress free trip to the theatre by removing the barriers that exist in the mainstream production.

In consultation with local organisations the Forum will, once again, modify the standard production of the pantomime to provide a more inclusive and welcoming experience.

This means that the auditorium house lights will be brighter than usual during the performance, sound effects will be reduced, there will be no black outs during the performance and, most importantly, audience members will be allowed to move freely around the auditorium and make as much noise as they wish.

Lisa Heaney, Box Office Manager at the Millennium Forum, is the driving force behind  the initiative.

She said: 'This is our second year putting on this specially adapted ‘relaxed’ pantomime.

'Last year’s production was unique to Northern Ireland theatres and it’s great to see other venues following our lead with their own versions this year.

'From talking to local groups throughout the years, we’ve learnt that many aspects of a standard theatre experience can cause difficulties for people with sensory difficulties. Busy foyers, unexpected music, lights going up and down and applause can all be unsettling. Even the interval can confuse children because it seems strange to leave the auditorium in the middle of an event.

'During the relaxed performance, the house lights will stay on during the show and families will be warned when to expect loud noises.

A 'chill out' area will be provided for anyone overwhelmed during the performance.

Pre-show walks around the theatre will be available to specific groups on request.
