Kapow! Batman fever comes to Derry

Derry is hosting  week-long celebration of one of the world’s best known super heroes.

The Nerve Centre has been transformed into Gotham City this week for the celebration of all things Batman.

Icons: Batman, which runs until next Saturday, celebrates the many manifestations of Batman.

The week features talks, screenings, FabLab workshops, Christopher Nolan’s Batman Trilogy at Brunswick Moviebowl, and a special Batman-themed day on Saturday at the Nerve Centre.

Throughout the week, the Nerve Centre will screen classic films that have influenced later instalments of the Batman franchise, including Taxi Driver, The Cabinet of Dr Caligari, Batman Returns and the film that brought Christopher Nolan to international attention, Memento.

The action-packed Batman Day – Kapow! on Saturday will begin at noon with a host of free Batman-themed activities for children and young people.

The Gotham Arcade will feature a selection of the very best Batman video games, and an interactive green screen that will take gamers on a high-speed chase in the Batmobile.

Kids can also get great art tips about how to draw a new villain for Batman in the Gotham Villains Comic Art workshops or they might prefer to make their own Bat memento in the FabLab workshop.

For older die-hard comic book fans, one of Ireland’s leading comic creators and artist on ‘Grayson’ for DC Comics, Stephen Mooney, will be doing a comic signing and taking part in a special panel discussing the ‘Greatest Batman Story Ever Told’.

There’s also a chance to sit in on afternoon screenings of documentaries tracing the history of Batman and animated films.
