Latest confirmation on A5 upgrade ‘good news’: McCartney

News that the North’s Roads Minister is to circulate a paper to his Executive colleagues on the upgrade of the A5 is “great news,” Foyle MLA Raymond McCartney has said.

The Sinn Fein representative was speaking after Danny Kennedy reiterated the support of Executive ministers and the Irish Government for the project at a recent meeting of the North-South Ministerial Council.

Mr McCartney said: “The minister said he intends to circulate a paper to his Executive colleagues on the A5 in the coming weeks.

"This is great news and will be welcomed by the vast majority of people who want to see progress on this project.”

Mr McCartney said securing the A5 dual carriageway project was a “top priority” for Sinn Féin.

He added: “It is essential for economic development, job creation, reducing journey times and most importantly, reducing the number of road deaths and injuries.”

Mr McCartney concluded: "We will take every opportunity to keep this project high on the agenda at Stormont and in Leinster House."
