A man has appeared at Derry Magistrates’ Court charged with assaulting and making threats to kill against his partner.

John Harkin (48) of Faustina Terrace in Derry was charged with the offences that were said to have occurred on July 26.

The alleged injured party called police to report that she had been assaulted by Harkin.

She alleged that he had punched her multiple times in the car before she went home and went to bed.

The next morning, she alleged that she woke up to find Harkin in the bed beside her, before he followed her into the kitchen and flipped the table at her, slicing open her finger. He then was said to have chased her and threatened to kill her.

The alleged injured party called police and made both written and body worn statements.

Police objected to bail as Harkin has a relevant record of domestic offences, including a suspended sentence from June this year involving the same alleged injured party.

Defence solicitor Seamus Quigley said that Harkin had been arrested while in the company of the alleged injured party, who he also said had withdrawn her statement.

District Judge Suzanne Rice called Harkin 'the most unlikely candidate for bail in some time', refusing the application.

He will appear again on August 13.
