Man charged with rape remanded in custody at Derry Magistrate's Court

The man, who cannot be named to protect the identity of the alleged victim in the case, is facing a series of charges
A man has been remanded in custody at Derry Magistrate's Court charged with rape.
The man, who cannot be named to protect the identity of the alleged victim in the case, is facing a series of charges.
He was charged with rape on April 4 as well as assaults against the same female on dates between March 24 and April 4.
He was also charged with a course of behaviour deemed to be abusive.
A police officer connected the accused to the charges and opposed bail.
He told the court that the rape allegation came about when the woman said she woke up and the defendant was having intercourse with her without her consent.
The court also heard that she alleged that later the same day she tried to leave the property and she claimed the defendant punched her.
The woman also alleged she had been assaulted several weeks previously and claimed that the defendant 'controlled her life' stopping her from seeing family and friends.
The police officer said that both parties in this case have Restraining Orders against each other.
He said police had 'strong objections to bail' as they felt the man would not abide by conditions.
Defence counsel Sean Doherty said there were 'obvious issues' with the alleged victim's account.
He said following the rape allegation the woman was said to have gone back to sleep.
The barrister said that the text messages would suggest that it was the woman who was making demands on the defendant.
Deputy District Judge John Rea said there was risk of re-offending and refused bail.
The man will appear again on May 2.
